The London Press Club: THP and the weekly Jazz Jam!
Message from Chuck Hagen:
Hi all. Just a quick note for your event calendars.
THP will be onstage again in two weeks on Friday, April 3rd, starting at 9 PM, at the Press Club.
The band has settled in at six players for now. Scotty Wilkinson (pno), John Nicholas (bass), Bobby Hughes (perc.), John Kenny (gtr), Rob Thibert (reeds), and myself, Chuck Hagen (tpt/flgl). We have not put a ceiling on band membership and are actually looking forward to the day we can advertise ourselves as an 'oversextet'.
We enjoy playing the Press Club very much but we are a pretty big band for the room. At the next gig we will have a vessel available for contributions for the band. I had thought of simply putting a $5 cover charge at the door, but then we must distinguish between Press Club members and may discourage some patrons who come merely to drink etc. That would entail putting someone on the door as well. So, I will leave it to those who hopefully have some disposable income they can share with some very talented and giving musicians. I know I don't have to justify this, everyone reading this knows what kind of entertainment they will be getting for five dollars. If only there were other bargains like this in the real world. 'Nuff said, please watch for and use the 'Band Pot' if you can.
Until THP play again on April 3rd, jazz fans can slate their thirst next Saturday at the weekly Press Club 'Jazzerday Saturday'. The fun starts at 2PM and goes 'til fiveish or sixish. It's getting to the point where I have to turn everything off before the musician's will leave. You gotta love that!
We have a lot of friends who come out and share their considerable talent at our gigs (Fridays and Saturdays) and we appreciate them very much. They include John Culjack, Mark Henning, Bert Hamer and Christine, Sharon Beeler, Donny DiCarlo, Grant Graham, Jessie Ross, Terry Fraser, Don Durkee, Chase Simmons, John Robert Axon, Darrio Ogrin ... There are many more and I apologize for missing them here but my lady is currwently waiting for me to go grocery shopping. If I don't go, I don't get anything I want, so I'm outta here.
And a special thank you to Barry Woody and the other DJ's who share their air time and promote these, and other, local events. Barry goes the extra mile and has taken the mike to announce selections and events coming up, at our gigs. He gives the band valuable feedback and advice and is a standout jazz afficianado (however you spell it). Thanks, from the band, Barry for your kind comments and promotion on your show. It is very much appreciated. We thank all the DJ's very much for all they do for London's local musician's.
Come on down to the Press Club and let us return the good will.
Hope to see many of you next week and in April, take care,
Chuck, et al.
