"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." -Aldous Huxley
Last week's Wortley Village Jazz/Blues Festival was a total success. With many people attending and a few suprises the festival was ready to go. Here is a slide show of last weekends highlights:
From the start, Ken Varley's performances of "Yardbird Suite" and "On Green Dolphin Street" was a suitable introduction to the festival's afternoon of jazz. The audience was then seduced by the sultry vocals of Natalie Howard on such songs as "Almost Like Being In Love" and "Girl From Impanema". Floating Point energized the crowd with it's version of Steely Dan's "Peg". Their smooth jazz sound was soon taken over by the Oliver Whitehead Group which was followed up finally by the Andy Lusher Quartet.
So, the actual line up was as follows:
One of the first surprises was the last minute addition of the Andy Lusher Quartet featuring Andy Lusher on sax, Rick McClelland (bass), Don DiCarlo (piano), and Ian MacKay (drums). The second surprise was the addition of Chris Robinson (sax) on "Little Sunflower". It was a dueling saxophone extravaganza to the end.
Another surprise highlight early on was the performance of Claire Whitehead (violin) with the Oliver Whitehead Group. Overall, the Wortley Village Jazz/Blues Festival was a fine addition to round out the city of London's summers end. I anticipate that next year's festival will be even better.
The turnout was enthusiastic and the music was fantastic: Here's a clip of the Wortley
